Background

Warner Music Group is a global music entertainment company across recorded music, music publishing, and artist services. They have internal tools to aid in the day-to-day operations of internal and external users. AMP is the Artist Management Platform that consumes data across multiple data points such as steaming services and social media to be aggregated in a way to help industry professionals gain insights and make data-driven decisions.

The idea for Year In Review came from Warner Music leadership, Max Lousada, and Scott Cohen, who wanted to offer Warner artists the equivalent of Spotify's year in review. The differentiator was that Warner could offer the kind of data that others couldn't - an aggregate across all digital service providers, not just one, as well as access to radio plays which an artist cannot access outside the Warner AMP app.

The Challange

This feature had been requested for 4 years before I joined the team, with a failed attempt the prior year where the feature could not be completed in time. With a 6 week deadline, I had to come up with ways to cut the scope to the bare minimum to ensure this could be done with the resources that we had. The goal is to provide Warner Music Artists and Managers with a summary of their performance data for 2022 across multiple data points. For this iteration, the feature would be mobile-only.

  1. Increase engagement with the AMP app by providing metrics that are otherwise unavailable
  2. Allow artists to review their aggregate data to gain insights into their annual performance
  3. Provide the ability for artists to engage fans by sharing their performance data
  4. Give managers visibility into how their artists are performing in order to make informed, data-driven business decisions

Process

  • Created user flows and prototypes to evaluate different navigation options
  • Defined which data points would be included, and how to handle missing data

  • Collaborated on the visual designs of the shareable card to ensure that it was visually pleasing, could accommodate the minimum and maximum data points, and did not violate any branding guidelines

Metrics & Outcome

  • This feature garnered enthusiastic feedback from Artists, empowering them with valuable insights into their data for 2022, which resulted in increased user engagement and sharing of their career progress.
  • Around 500 users (or ~85%) interacted with the feature.
  • 50% of those users shared their end-of-year summary with their fans!

After years of requests for this feature, and despite the very tight deadline, my team was able to deliver it for the first time, on time!
